Cake icing and sugarcraft is as much of an art as it is a craft. Anyone who is familiar with this activity will understand that there is as much pleasure to be gained from contemplating these creations as there is from eating them! Sometimes the work produced is more akin to sculpture than to cakes and has as much potential to satisfy the emotions as it does to satisfy hunger. Our three-term course is open to anyone with an interest and enthusiasm in cake icing and sugarcraft and who may have wondered how those beautiful cake creations that celebrate the special occasions in life such as weddings, birthdays and aniversaries are made. No previous experience is necessary.

Creative Craft (Cake Decorating and Sugar Craft) (part time) @ Doncaster College course website
This qualification has been designed for students who are interested in developing skills in Cake Decoration and Sugarcraft making as a vocational study. The cake decoration and sugarcraft course is a September start. It is suitable for students 16 years and over. This is a thirty week course enabling students to complete 4 units. Students will be required to keep a course folder demonstrating their knowledge of the course, as well as their design work. Equipment and materials will be required by the student, although this will be discussed at the first lesson. Every attempt will be made to keep this to a minimum, improvising where possible. Students on this course are expected to wear a white overall or apron.

This course is aimed at those interested in cake decorating and sugarcraft with a view to learning new skills or building upon existing ones, to develop this interest into a first step qualification. The course provides an introduction to the world of Sugarcraft. Two SQA units are covered on the course including:- •Royal Icing – Coating and Borders, Piping techniques to commercial standards, Cake Decoration Techniques, Marzipaning Cakes; •Sugar Paste Processes – Making and coating of cakes, various modern sugarcraft techniques including Swags, Garrett Frills, Crimping and Embossing; Novelty Cakes; Sugar Flowers.
